BSBR (Building Small Business Resilience) Research Project (Completed)
Building Small Business Resilience Through Digital Marketing
In response to the economic shocks triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Building Small Business Resilience (BSBR) Digital Marketing Training Program was developed to empower small business owners—particularly from underrepresented communities—with the skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.
Led by Sheridan College, the program was delivered in multiple phases including design, development, and rigorous testing through Alpha and Beta cohorts. The 12-week training equipped participants with strategic and practical skills in digital marketing—from campaign planning to content creation and performance analysis. The results were striking: participants increased their digital marketing confidence by up to 128%, customer engagement by nearly 300%, and revenue by over 240% in some cases.
The program’s impact extended beyond skill-building—it helped participants reduce dependence on paid advertising, enhance organic reach, and scale operations nationally and internationally. One key insight: strategic planning emerged as the most transformative component, with many participants revisiting their plans months after graduation.
Future iterations of the program aim to include hybrid delivery, expanded support, and a stronger focus on experiential learning. As digitization accelerates, BSBR continues to pave a resilient path forward for small business success.
